NLFSD Chapter 77
by berryChapter 77
The mention of âprizesâ piqued Jiwoonâs curiosity at first, but then he remembered the last time â first place at the quiz contest had earned him nothing but a pile of SookryeoâDoongyiš merchandise. He tamped down his expectations quickly. Even if they won again, it would just be more of the same. Honestly, roaming the forest handâinâhand with Taecheon is the real prize.
And with that thought, Jiwoon saw through the organizerâs intent completely.
In truth, there werenât many treasure notes hidden, and the prizes werenât spectacular. The whole point was simply to get couples to walk together, enjoy the woods, and cooperate.
âOnce the treasure hunt is done, weâll gather back here on the grass for a communal picnic. Tonight, there will also be a campfire. Lodging has been arranged â each couple gets their own log cabin. A cozy experience, indeed.â
Paragliding wouldâve been fun, but this really is healing. Iâm glad we chose this course.
âTreasure hunt begins now for the next hour. Start!â
âLetâs go quickly!â
Beaming, Jiwoon tugged on Taecheonâs hand. Running didnât necessarily mean finding treasures faster, but his mood was high just to run and laugh.
Crisp, fresh air filled his lungs. Early winter chill softened by daytime sun made the forest uplifting with every breath.
âWalking like this, itâs not cold at all.â
âSame for me.â
Good. My body feels stable â no fever swings this time.
Relieved, Jiwoon squeezed Taecheonâs hand tighter.
Here and there forest interpreters in park uniforms greeted couples, explaining the hidden wonders: secrets of phytoncides², the meaning of forest as an ecosystem. Jiwoon and Taecheon paused often, listening to tales of old trees and their life force.
âOh no, we should be looking for treasure!â
âIndeed. Time has passed quickly.â
Thirty minutes already gone, simply holding hands and talking.
âFeels like time flows all on its own.â
âIt is strange⌠I feel the same.â
âHonestly⌠this feels like a dream. Just walking handâinâhand with you like this.â
It was natural â in the early stages of romance, even idle gazes felt fun. Jiwoon playfully wriggled his fingers in Taecheonâs, tightening grip then pretending to slip out. Taecheon watched tenderly, murmuring:
âCanât sit still, can you?â
He tucked Jiwoonâs hand into his jacket pocket.
âLet me tie it down properly.â
âTâTaecheonâŚâ
âWarm, isnât it?â
Trapped in his pocket, the hand was confined yet cozy. Jiwoonâs ears flushed pink. Despite being physically intimate many times already, even such small everyday skinship made him blush furiously.
My chest feels like bursting, itâs all so overwhelming. Like one poke from a needle would make me explode.
Flustered, embarrassed, giddy â he was drowning in it whenâ
âLook, over there!â
At the base of a giant tree trunk, amidst tall grass, a folded note peeked out.
âThe treasure note.â
âYes! Thatâs it!â
Running over, they snatched it up. Sealed with a SookryeoâDoongyi sticker, inside read: âCongratulations, First Place!â
âWhatâ! First place!â
âIndeed it is. Well done, Jiwoon.â
Even expected to be trivial, the joy of winning was undeniable. Grinning, Jiwoon clasped the note to his chest.
âSince we found it early, should we eat our lunch?â
âKimbap? Sounds good.â
Still thirty minutes left, plenty enough for food. They spread their mini picnic mat, laid out the drinks and lunchbox. The kimbap looked like abstract art, but coffee and juice gave an air of legitimacy.
On the mat, Jiwoon handed a roll to Taecheon.
âSay âah.ââ
âI wonât refuse.â
Overâoiled, overâsalted â the rolls were barely edible. But Taecheon reminded himself of the sincerity. He quietly ate, piece by piece, until the container was empty.
âDelicious. You could open a Kimbap HeavenÂł chain.â
âReally?â
âWould sell out instantly.â
âTry the coffee too. I made it this morning on the capsule machine.â
He handed over the tumbler. Luckily, he had picked exactly Taecheonâs preference: a highâcaffeine espresso pod.
âExcellent. I like it very much.â
âThank goodness.â
âYouâre not eating kimbap?â
âAh⌠I snacked too much during prep, so Iâm tired of it.â
âThen at least drink orange juice.â
He reached for the cap.
âNo, no. I already drank lots in the morning.â
âYou usually go crazy for orange juice.â
âI actually had three bottles already before we left. Iâm fine.â
In truth, his stomach ached dully since earlier. The same heavy feeling from last night. Alarm bells rang inside him â but he smiled, hiding it.
Body, donât fail me here. Please settle down.
Feigning fullness, he covered the lunchbox.
âIâll wait for the proper dinner later.â
They packed away food, rolled up the mat, and walked back to the trailhead.
âDid you all find treasures?â
âYes!â
Jiwoon raised his hand high. So did most couples.
âWho found first prize?â
âWe did.â
âOh, our lucky winners! Come forward.â
Led ahead, Jiwoon received a surprisingly large box. Its weight was hefty.
âHere is your first prize!â
âWhat is it?â
âOpen and see.â
Inside was a figure about 20 cm tallâanother SookryeoâDoongyi, except finished in rigid plastic, not plush.
ââŚA doll? But we already have one at home.â
Disappointed, he recalled the previous plush. But the organizer beamed.
âIt isnât a plush â itâs AI! Artificial Intelligence SookryeoâDoongyi!â
âWhat?â
âIt answers commands: ask it todayâs weather, and itâll find data. It can control appliances by voice, and even play word games when bored.â
âWow.â Participants murmured it was actually quite useful.
âAnd hereâs the best part â press the heart button on its cheek.â
Jiwoon examined. Indeed, a heartâshaped button. He pressed it.
âDarling! I love you!â
The synthetic voice blared, LEDs flashing across its chest with scrolling text: <Darling! I love you>.
âSurprised? Thatâs just an example recorded by a voice actor. Each couple can record your own personalized messages and place it by your spouseâs bedside.â
âNow that is neat.â
Jiwoon was genuinely impressed. He imagined leaving sweet recordings to surprise Taecheon â maybe hide it in bed, or more daringly place it on his desk at work. The thought thrilled him.
âI like it! Thank you so much.â
âIf the winners are happy, so are we! Applause!â
Back at his seat, Taecheon smiled wide.
âSo you like it this much?â
âYes. Especially the âDarling, I love youâ feature. Amazing.â
As if to prove it, Jiwoon pressed the cheek again. The robotic voice echoed: I love you.
Yes. Someday, Iâll say the words myself. Then Taecheon will answer back with his incredible voice.
But thenâhis thoughts snagged.
Wait a minute. IâI havenât said them yet, out of shyness. But come to think of it⌠hasnât Taecheon never said âI love youâ to me either? Not even âI like youâ?
The hollow feeling heâd sensed during the proposal resurfaced, sharp.
Weâre dating now, married even, but something felt missing. Now I know⌠itâs this. We never exchanged those words.
