Wang Ying and Lin Sui looked up; a woman stood at the shop entrance, very obviously cursing at them.
Though he clearly had never met her, Wang Ying turned and asked Lin Sui, âDo you know her?â
Lin Sui shook his head. âDonât.â
Wang Ying stood and walked forward. âMadam, perhaps thereâs been a misunderstanding?â
âMisunderstanding?â The woman pointed at Wang Ying. âIs your husband dead?â
Wang Ying flared at once, jabbing a finger at her nose. âYour husband is the one whoâs dead! My husband is studying perfectly well at the prefectural academyâwhy curse him?â
The woman blinked. âThen Iâve mistaken the personâthe little gÄâerâs husband is the one who died, isnât he!â
Lin Sui nodded once and instantly understood. âYouâre Shopkeeper Weiâs wife?â
âWell now, you little hussyâyou do know he has a wife!â
Wang Ying frowned and put himself in front of Lin Sui. âMind your tongue. If you open your mouth to insult again, I wonât be polite!â
âYou wonât be polite? I wonât be polite! Seducing another womanâs manâdoing something so indecent and you wonât let people say it?â
Lin Sui burned with anger. âWhat indecency did I do? It was clearly your husband being foul-mouthed here; I drove him out. How did that become me âseducingâ him in your mouth?â
The foolish woman didnât believe it. âHow could my husband fancy you? Skinny as a stickâwho knows if youâre even good for bearing children.â
That jabbed Lin Suiâs sore spot. Before he could speak, Wang Ying lifted a hand and shoved the woman out.
âGet out! If youâve got ability, keep your husband in hand. Come make a scene here again and Iâll report you to the authorities!â
The woman stumbled and plopped onto the ground to start a tantrum. âCome look, everyoneâthis little widower is loose and shamelessâseduces someone elseâs husband and then beats people. What âice shopâ? Looks more like a brothel front!â
Quite a few people came at the noise to watch and pointed at Wang Ying and Lin Sui.
Wang Ying grabbed the broom and rushed over. âSay another nonsense word! If youâve any ability, manage your husbandâwhy bring your ruckus to someone elseâs shop!â
âHit me, go onâhit me! My nephew is the Marquis of Wuping. Lay a hand on me and see what happens to you!â
âI donât care what âmonkeyâ he isâslander my younger brother again and even if I kill you, Iâll pay with my life!â
âAiyaaââ The woman scrambled, covering her head, and the two maids and an old servant shielding her took several broom blows as well before they fled in a rout.
After they left, the gawkers also dispersed. Lin Sui fretted, âSister-in-law, have I caused trouble?â
âDonât mind her. Come inside.â
Once indoors, Wang Ying asked after the whole matter, and Lin Sui recounted every detail. When done, he lowered his head and picked at his fingers. âItâs my fault. I shouldnât have driven him out that day. If Iâd reasoned with him, this wouldnât have happened todayâŠâ
âYou did very well. Faced with such a lecher, you canât reason. Speak gently and heâll only think youâre playing coy. One stick was lightâif Iâd been here Iâd have beaten him a head full of lumps!â
Lin Sui gave a brief laugh, then sagged again. âShe said her nephew is the Marquis of Wupingâwill we be in for trouble?â
Wang Ying also felt uncertain. âLet her be. If it turns serious, weâll report it. I donât believe black can be made white!â
Lin Sui bowed his head in guilt. The last time Cousin was taken by the authorities, they had been frightened enough. It hadnât been long and now thisâover time, the shopâs name would surely suffer.
âDonât dwell on it. Itâs slow these days anywayâclose the shop and rest at home. When it cools, weâll sell vegetables again.â
âMmâŠâ
The next day the shop stayed shut. Taking the chance, Wang Ying went to look in on the interior work at the house. Before leaving, he gave Lin Sui two strings of cash and told him to go out strolling with Qingyun and buy two sets of clothes for autumnâbest not sit at home stewing.
Qingyun had also heard about the shop incident and comforted him. âDonât heed that womanâs nonsense. If we act upright, let those sorts wag their tonguesâtreat it like a dog barking.â
Lin Sui pulled up a corner of his mouth, but his heart stayed heavy, fretting that the woman would call her cousin the Marquis of Wuping to make trouble. It hadnât been easy for Cousin and Sister-in-law to gain their footing in the prefectural city; heaven forbid his fault cut off their path.
Qingyun shook his arm. âEnoughâdonât think about it. Come with me to buy some rouge and powder for the betrothal.â
âMm.â
After tidying up, they went out. The weather was fineâhigh, clear autumn; though still warm, the breeze was no longer sticky. There were plenty of women and young gÄâer strolling the streets.
They wandered down Zhengyang Street. Passing a sweet-water stall, Qingyun bought two bowls. They sat on small street stools, drinking and watching the passersby.
âJust over two months to the betrothal. I get nervous just thinking about it. I donât know what it will be like afterwardsâŠâ
âAunt Qin and Uncle are good folkâand Young Master Liu is earnest about you. After betrothal, itâll surely be harmonious.â
âWhat if itâs all an act? What if everything changes after I marry?â
âIt wonât. If anyone dares bully you, even if cousinâs held back, Sister-in-law would absolutely grab a cleaver and charge in.â
Lin Sui chuckled and nodded, remembering how Sister-in-law helped him yesterday. With a Sister-in-law who treated him like a real younger brother, he couldnât let this trouble weigh on themâhe had to settle it himself.
After the sweet-water, they wandered on. At a cosmetics shop, Qingyun bought a box of rouge and one of powder pasteâover two hundred cash in all. The rouge box was ceramic, painted with a beautyâdelicate and lovely.
Ancient cosmetics were not so different from modernâused to cover blemishes. Powder paste tended more white; rouge more red. Ordinary people rarely used them except on formal occasions. Cosmetics werenât just for womenâmen applied them as well; during state rites even the emperor wore makeup for full dress.
Leaving the shop, they went to the clothing store. In this half year in the city, Lin Sui had grown tallerâthe cuffs and hems had grown shortâtime to buy two new sets to rotate. He chose dark colors and coarse clothâone set cost just over two hundred cash.
âShopkeeper, may we try this set?â
Qingyun said, âToo stodgy for youâbetter the cyan one next to it.â
Lin Sui shook his head. âThis one.â If he dressed plainer, perhaps he would draw less trouble.
The owner found a size to fit and handed it over. âYoung masteri, try it in there.â
Lin Sui went in and, before long, came out in a clay-yellow tunicâmaking him look dull and even sallow compared to before.
âOh dearâthat color is awfulâmakes you look seven or eight years older.â
Lin Sui checked the bronze mirror and looked quite satisfied. âThis one. And another in the same.â
After seeing Qingyun home from the clothing shop, he made an excuse to go check on the houseâand slipped out alone.
He went to Weiâs candle-and-incense shop, intending to apologize and ask Shopkeeper Wei to explain to his wife and stop coming to slander their shop. But only a young clerk was there; yesterday, when Wei Changgui returned home, his wife had scratched his face to ribbonsâhe couldnât leave the house.
Finding no one, Lin Sui bit his lip and decided to go straight to the Marquis of Wuping. Heâd had a brief encounter with the man at Qingfeng Templeâperhaps heâd remember. If he explained the matter clearly and blame was to be had, let it fall on himselfâjust not on Cousin and Sister-in-law.
It was no small feat for a stranger to find his wayâbut he managed to ask around and find the marquisâs residence.
He stood at the gate staring up at the high plaque, took a deep breath, and, mustering courage, stepped up and knocked.
After a moment, a man peered from the wicket. âWho are you seeking?â
Lin Sui tensed at once, stammering. âI-I-I seek the Marquis of Wupingâurgent business!â
âDo you have a calling card?â
âN-noâŠâ
âThen please go back.â
Lin Sui quickly put his foot in the door. âI truly have urgent businessâplease announce me.â
âHeyâdonât stick your foot inâwhat if I shut it and crush you!â
With no other way, Lin Sui dropped to his knees and kowtowed. âPleaseâI beg you!â
The porter was an honest sort; the kneeling startled him into stepping away. âUp, up. The marquis is not at the residence. If you must find him, go to the western barracks and askâperhaps youâll catch him.â
âThank you!â
âNo thanks needed.â He hurried to bolt the door and thought: wonder what this little gÄâerâs relation to the marquis isânever had a gÄâer come asking for himâŠ
With a direction, Lin Sui headed west for the military camp. It wasnât far from the cityâon horseback, two quarter-hours; on foot, it took him an hour.
Hot and tired, cheeks flushed, he wiped his brow and, mustering courage, stepped forward. âI seek the Marquis of Wupingâplease, sirs, carry a message.â
The gate guards, seeing a gÄâer, didnât drive him off and circled to tease him. âWhat for?â
âVery important business.â
âHehâhow important? Barbarians at the border or bandits in the city?â
Lin Sui could only mumble, begging that they report him. He had to see the marquis.
The small crowd soon drew the notice of Captain Tian. He came up, shooed the loafers, and asked Lin Sui where he was from. âWait here. Iâll carry a word. If the marquis wonât see you, nothing can be done.â
âThank you, sir!â
Old Tian, full of excitement, ran into the camp. Li Mu was discussing matters with his officers when the knock disrupted him; he frowned and had the man enter.
âWhoâs at the gate?â
âA little gÄâer.â
Ears pricked up all around among the old soldiers. âWhat gÄâer? How oldâwhatâs he look like?â
Li Mu was just as puzzled. âWhat gÄâer?â
âNot very oldâquite handsome,â said Captain Tian. âAsked by name to see youâsays itâs âvery important.ââ
The room erupted. âNot fair, my lordâwhen did you find a sweetheart and keep it from us?â
âLetâs go see!â
âDonât talk nonsense, damn you all. Stay hereâIâll go have a look.â
