Hero Hunter is on Parental Leave C62
by berryChapter 62
Sanghuiâwho had never once disobeyed Yeongungâs ordersâglared, whites of his eyes flashing, as if ghosts truly were his worst nightmare.
âIf I get so scared I die of a heart attack, hyung, will you file this as an industrial accident?â
His face looked downright possessed. Yeongung stared at the collection of problem children surrounding him, utterly fed up.
âHonestly. One by one, youâre all acting out. Should I call a famous shaman and have a ritual done or something?â
At that moment, a man reached into Hamgyeolâs grocery bag, pulled out a zucchini, and smacked Sanghui on the head with it.
Even an ordinary zucchini became a weapon harder than a wooden practice sword in Won Iheunâs hands.
âThatâs enough.â
Hit properly and brought back to his senses, Sanghui bowed his head deeply and apologized in formal speech. He knew better than anyone that when Iheun acted like this, self-preservation was wise.
âIâIâm sorry. I was out of line.â
The problem was that Sanghuiâs near-insubordination toward Yeongung had truly irritated Iheun. He looked down coldly at the bowed subordinate.
Yeongung quickly stepped in, blocking him before he could slip into full instructor mode.
âHeâs learned his lesson by now.â
Just moments ago, Sanghui had been acting possessed enough to deserve executionâbut seeing him get properly scolded left Yeongung oddly uncomfortable. He preferred Sanghui cheerful rather than dejected.
Unfortunately, Yeongung taking Sanghuiâs side sparked unintended jealousy in Iheun. He disliked how indulgent Yeongung was toward the idiot duo.
âYou let things slide every time, so they donât know their place.â
âIâll discipline him properly later. Letâs stop here for today. We need to go home and put Jaehee to bed.â
Jaehee had recently begun sleeping through the night, so bedtime was still a while offâbut Yeongung deliberately used the child as an excuse.
ââŠFine. Just this once.â
âYeah. Just this once.â
Sanghui, tense to the brim, apologized again.
âIâm sorry for being careless. Iâll be more mindful.â
Iheun moved away without responding. Yeongung glanced at his retreating back, then patted Sanghuiâs shoulder twice.
âCome over to our place after dinner. Weâll eat and have a short meeting about how to handle the magical beast.â
ââŠYes.â
Muhae Apartment, Building B, Unit 303
After dinner, the three gathered in the living room. Yeongung checked that Jaehee was sleeping soundly in the master bedroom, then sat in an empty spot on the sofa.
âDo you really think itâs a magical beast?â
âGiven Jaeheeâs reaction, a rift likely opened at the end of Building Aâs fourth-floor corridor.â
âA rift? Not a gate?â
Hamgyeol asked, recalling the basic explanation heâd once heard from Dr. Richmond and Bertrand.
âEither a rift openedâor a beast slipped through a briefly opened rift.â
âI think the latter is more likely.â
âAgreed. And although it set a trap to lure humansâŠâ
ââŠAlthough?â
Yeongung, whoâd been quietly listening, joined in.
âItâs strange that it lures people but doesnât consume them. Whatâs its goal?â
Iheun shifted closer to Yeongung.
âTo know its form, someone has to go in.â
After thinking hard, Sanghui spoke heavily.
ââŠHyung, Iâll go. Itâs ridiculous for the leaders to handle something like this. If the Quesadilla Guild hears about it, theyâll laugh their asses off.â
âDonât push it. The Guild Masterâs already decided to go in.â
âBut stillââ
Hamgyeol opposed him, remembering how Sanghui had suffered nightmares for a month after watching a horror movie.
Unexpectedly, Yeongung backed Sanghui up.
âThen go together. This might erase your weakness. Youâve got how many people under you? Better to face it head-on now than embarrass yourself later.â
âDamn it, hyung! Bringing up my team is dirty. I canât argue back.â
âYouâre proud. Better one hard experience now than public humiliation later. And with Won Iheun beside you, whatâs there to fear?â
ââŠFine. Fuck it. Itâll work out somehow. I wonât be aloneâand Iâll have the Guild Master who hunts ghosts with me.â
Clenching his fist, Sanghui steeled himself. Yeongung chuckled and teased,
âLetâs meet alive, okay?â
âOf course alive! Donât jinx it!â
Laughing, Yeongung popped a slice of apple Iheun had peeled into his mouth. It was crisp and sweet.
âOh, right. Sanghui, whatâs your monster affinity stat?â
âHuh? Itâs garbage. Why?â
âDepending on what it is, youâll probably end up contracting that beast after this.â
âI canât handle familiars. Iheun-hyung should raise it.â
At that, Yeongungâwhoâd earlier refused even rock-paper-scissorsâsuddenly grew interested.
ââŠShould I go instead?â
âYou?â
âYeah.â
Usually, rewards from cleared gates went to whoever ran the mission. Team rewards followed guild contracts, but solo rewards belonged solely to the individual. Under Tako Guild, unfair grabs never happened.
So Yeongung had assumed the beast would be Sanghuiâs. Having a familiar was a hunterâs dream. But Sanghui showed no interest.
Knowing Iheun kept no familiars made Yeongung even more tempted. He wanted to resolve this himself and claim the beast.
Since Jaehee had reacted with âmeow, meow,â the beast was likely feline.
âIf my guess is right, itâs probably a cat-type magical beast. If itâs high-grade, itâd be good as Jaeheeâs companion.â
That was Yeongungâs real motive.
Heâd always had high monster affinity and once dreamed of becoming a tamer. He already had several contracted creaturesâincluding the âdragon he absolutely hated in real lifeâ that Iheun had gifted him.
Familiars never betray their acknowledged contractor. When Jaehee grew a bit more, it would be a good friend and protector. Imagining Jaehee playing with a cat-like beast made Yeongung smile.
Iheun, however, narrowed his eyes. He already disliked how many creatures followed Yeongungâand now he wanted another?
âYou already have quite a few familiars.â
High-grade beasts were intelligent but difficult to manage. Until Jaehee grew older, Yeongung would inevitably be the one caring for it.
âItâs fine. I like animals anyway. Oh! Come to think of it, Jaehee really takes after meâhe likes animals too.â
The moment he saw Yeongungâs radiant smile, Iheun knew heâd lose this battle.
âThen promise me thisâdonât neglect me or treat me poorly because of it. Promise now. Before entering the rift.â
Yeongungâs neck and ears burned red as he hissed under his breath,
âPlease⊠donât embarrass me in front of the kids.â
The idiot duo theatrically picked at their ears.
âHamgyeol, you hear something?â
âHuh? No. Isnât it just you and me?â
âEnough. Hamgyeol stays with Jaehee. The three of us go in. Agreed?â
With that settled, Yeongung laid out his plan.
âAlright. Hereâs what weâll doâŠâ
Five minutes to midnight.
Muhae Apartment, Building A, 4th Floor Corridor.
âSo the crying comes from the end of the hall.â
âYeah. Every night at midnight.â
âNot much time left.â
Sanghui stayed behind the two seniors. Iheun brushed off Sanghuiâs grip on his shirt collar like shooing a bug.
âBack off.â
Awkwardly scratching his head, Sanghui voiced something that had bothered him.
âWhy were people wearing casts? If the beast didnât attack them, howâd they get hurt?â
Yeongung sent a cluster of fireflies toward the buildingâs exterior wall.
âSee that door at the end leading to the external stairs? They panicked, stepped back, and fell from there.â
ââŠIdiots? Falling on their own?â
âDonât think like a hunter. Theyâre unawakened civilians. You sure you wouldnât panic?â
After a pause, Sanghui shook his head hard.
ââŠNo. Iâm only saying this because youâre here, but Iâm scared shitless.â
âThen cling tightly to Won Iheun, the professional ghost hunter.â
After teasing him once more, Yeongung stepped closer to the external stairs. When he put weight on them, the rusted metal screeched ominously. The bolts looked loose enough to give way if a few adults ran at once.
